Summary of “Mr and Mrs Single”

Mr. Cui Minguo and his wife Zhang Jingyi, a couple of white collars living in Beijing, the capital of China, are so poor that they have been under the pressure of housing and car loans.

Tony, a friend of Cui’s, is a chief perfumer at a world-famous perfume company, which is recruiting a single male assistant president. With the help of Tony, Cui Minguo successfully got the job so that a high salary enabled him to alleviate the financial anxiet, but he also had to conceal a fact that he got married.

It happens that Ms. Zhang Jingyi is the certified property manager in the same mansion. However, unlike Mr. Cui, Ms. Zhang is often together with Mr. Cui to work and have a lunch. Mr. Cui had no idea on perfumes but he was very sensitive to the perfumes. With the help of Tony, he worked very hard and became more familiar with 241 kinds of perfumes in his company while he showed much interest in and had an in-depth understanding of perfumes and its culture.

Mr. Yamamoto, one of VIP clients, requested a customized perfume named “Memory”, but the concept was too broad to prepare the perfume.

When the expiry was due, Mr. Yamamoto took out a light yellow scarf from an exquisite safe at the office. He said, “This is my memory.” Unfortunately, Tony had a cold and Mandy had no feeling on the scent of the scarf because of pollen allergy. Tony was desperate to ask Mr. Cui for help. Mr. Cui with a skilled sniffing nose smelled the scent from the scarf immediately. After a short and intense preparation, a new brand perfume called Memory was in front of Mr. Yamamoto. This is just the scent Mr. Yamamoto wanted. Finally Mr. Yamamoto told an unforgettable love story which happened thirty years ago. Mr. Cui Minguo succeeded in pulling the company through. As a result, Mandy fell in love with Mr. Cui who has pretended to be single.

Ru Xiaoguo, a friend of Zhang Jingyi’s, reminded of Zhang so that finally Zhang began to question Mr. Cui. She rushed into the perfume company and knew that Cui was a marriage concealer. She forgave Mr. Cui because of the housing loan. Apart from this, she began to assist Mr. Cui to play games of marriage concealer.

Cui, Zhang and Mandy were once at the same elevator. All of sudden the elevator did not work, and it turned totally dark. When it turned light, Zhang was squatting by herself while Mandy was embracing Cui. This made Zhang doubt if they had affairs. Then there was a cold war between her and Cui.

Mandy asked Cui to participate in an international perfume conference together and Cui decided to relieve himself from the cold war and agreed to go together.
When hearing that Cui was going to leave with Mandy, Ru Xiaoguo had no idea and told Ms. Zhang Jingyi if he would be very nice to you after coming home, it means he had an affair with Mandy in Hainan.

Mr. Cui and Mandy arrived at Hainan. They encountered an interview meeting on the beach. One of the journalists asked one of the actors who acted “Goodie-goodie” husband, “Are you married?” The actor replied, “Everybody knows I am still single.” The journalist continued to ask, “Are you planning to get married?” The actor answered, “Nope. I have not met the right one yet.”

When they returned to the hotel, fragile Mandy and frustrated Cui Minguo hugged each other. When they were to have sex, Zhang Jingyi came to his mind, so everything was over.

When Mandy realized it was impossible, she smartly left. Cui felt guilty and bought Zhang a gift she desired for a long time. However, Ms. Zhang misinterpreted that Mr. Cui had an affair with Mandy. Then Ms. Zhang did not give Mr. Cui a chance to explain before they got divorced.

One year later, Mr. Cui became a chief perfumer with the international brand so that his perfumes were sold well. Cui and Zhang came across each other in front of a large perfume poster, which said “Get married! It is the antidote of love…”
