Prince Kung’s Mansion is the only well-preserved imperial residence of Qing Dynasty in China. Among its owners, two were especially powerful and prestigious: one was He Shen, Emperor Qian Long's favorite minister, who lived here during 1776 and 1799; and the other was Prince Yixin, the brother of Emperor Xian Feng, who lived here during 1852 and 1898. Prince Yixin’s title is Kung, hence its current name: Prince Kung’s mansion.
Prince Kung’s Mansion consists of two parts: the residence and the gardens, with an area of 61,120 square meters. Of them, the residence occupies an area of 32,260 square meters while the gardens occupy an area of 28,860 square meters. In 1982, Prince Kung’s mansion was appraised as one of the most important cultural relics under national protection. In 2012, it was appraised by the State Tourism Administration as one of the national AAAAA tourist destinations.
Prince Kung’s Mansion is divided into the left, central and right parts. Each part consists of five court-yards. The building complex is grand and elegant. The roofs of the buildings on the central axis are decorated with green glazed tiles, as a symbol of the imperial authority of the prince, which is inferior to none except for the emperor. He Shen used to arrogate himself on building and decorating the mansion in a way that was way beyond his status. As a result, what’s left behind throughout history are all of great values and incomparable beauty.
The Garden is also called Garden of Gathering Beauty, where all the grace and elegance show themselves in flowers, rockeries, pavilions, and woods. There are over 60 sites of beauty or interests scattered in the east, central and west parts. The Houzhao Terrace, Western-Style Archway, and Grand Theatre House and the Fu Stele are hailed as the three wonders and one treasure of the mansion.
