Overview
Palace Museum is based on the Forbidden City, the imperial palace of Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a large-scale national comprehensive museum that features ancient Chinese architecture, ancient arts and history of the royal court life of Ming and Qing dynasties and collection of cultural relics. It has a collection of 1.8 million pieces of cultural relics.
The construction of Forbidden City started in 1406 and finished in 1420. A total of 24 emperors in Ming and Qing dynasties used to live here, ruling China for over 491 years.
The Forbidden City is divided into two parts: the outer court and the inner court. The part to the south of Gate of Heavenly Purity is outer court, where the emperor and his officials held rituals and conducted political activities. The part to the north of Gate of Heavenly Purity is inner court, where the emperor resided together with his empress and concubines and his young children as well as the empress and concubines of the emperor before him.
When the Xinhai Revolution led by Sun Yat-sen overthrew the rule of the Qing monarch in1911, the former royal family led by Pu Yi, the last emperor of Qing dynasty, was able to continue to live in the Forbidden City according to the stipulation of Favorable Treatment of the Qing Monarch. In 1914, an antique display room was established in the outer court. In 1924, General Feng Yuxiang had Pu Yi ejected from the Forbidden City. In 1925, a grand ceremony was held to celebrate the establishment of Palace Museum at the Gate of Heavenly Purity. In 1961, the State Council announced the Palace Museum as one of the first very important cultural relics under national protection.
